Educational and reseach activities are carried out in five specialised subdepartments, namely Marketing, Management, Quality Management and Business Statistics, Production Management and the Subdepartment of Administration.
We offer courses in the following areas: fundamentals of marketing, international marketing, service marketing, consumer behaviour, product and brand management, marketing research, sales management, relationship marketing
In line with the main focus of the university, faculty research mostly focuses on the industrial aspects of marketing, and explores novel directions of the field. These include the following research areas:
- Innovation and new product marketing and related issues, such as the integration of R&D and marketing;
- University-industry relations; marketing educational R&D;
- Business networks, network cooperation, and the related area of cooperation within innovation clusters.
Research activities are also carried out in specific research groups both within the institution (Farkas Heller Innovation Research Group) and in cooperation with partner universities and research institutions, such as Corvinus University (e.g. “Competing in the World” research programme) GKI Economic Research Company, the Institute for Research Organisation at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Clymbol Research, the Institute for Marketing and Media at Corvinus University and the Marketing Institute at the University of Miskolc.
The educational and research focus of this subdepartment lies primarily in the “soft” areas of the field, as they concentrate on organizational success and on the human factors in organizations. Some of the research questions addressed include:
- How do individuals and groups behave in the workplace, and how can a leader influence their behaviour?
- What strategic considerations are required for organizational success?
- What sort of technology management, HR management, and information management are needed to optimize individual and organizational productivity?
- What are the optimal methods of instituting change?
- How can we bring the best out of human resources in a constantly changing knowledge economy?
- What are the specific features of not-for-profit organizations as compared to business enterprises?
The subdepartment partake in all of the BA programmes of the Faculty, in several MA/MSc programmes at the engineering faculties, as well as in the full-time and part-time MA/MSc and PhD education in Economics and Engineering Management at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences. They offer courses in: Human Resource Management, Effective Leadership, Information Management, Fundamentals of Management, Management and Corporate Economics, Managing Non-profit Organizations, Strategic Level Management Issues, Organizational Behaviour, Technology Management, Business Environment, Business Economics II., Business Communication, Managing Change. The subdepartment participate (with both more general and very specific courses) in various engineering BSc and MSc programmes run in English as well.
The subdepartment also conduct research nationally and internationally, into such issues as the assessment and development of human capital, multi-dimensional modelling of the reception of change, technology mapping, job prospects after graduation, regulation framework and support system for students with special needs, special issues of talent management within the business sphere, reputation control and make alternative preliminary calculations through Big Data analyses. These research projects have been presented at various prestigious national and international conferences and published in leading journals in the field; in addition, members of the subdepartment have published several books and chapters of books.
Teaching and research in the Quality Management and Business Statistics Subdepartment has centred on quality and reliability issues of products, services, production, and service systems. Beside the management aspects, they also highlight questions of method, quantitative methods in particular, as well as their practical application.
The subdepartment offer courses in: Fundamentals of Quality Management, Principles and Philosophy of Total Quality Management (TQM), Statistical Process Control, Quality Management, Self-Assessment: Models and Methods, Reliability Theory and Reliability Management, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Business Process Flows: Management, Models and Reliability, Quantitative Methods, Business Statistics, Soft Computing Methods in Management. The questions and issues tackled in these courses also appear as subsets of broader-issue courses in the engineering, management, and engineering management BA/BSc programmes, in the MBA programme, in the MA programmes in Engineering Management, in Management and Leadership, in Finance, and in Marketing, as well as in related PhD programmes. The subdepartment have for several years been teaching Fundamentals of Quality Management in English both as an independent course and as a subset of broader management courses.
The research findings of the subdepartment are constantly incorporated into their teaching. Accordingly, research pursued in the subdepartment is focused on issues in quality management, reliability theory and reliability management – these also appear as popular research topics in the doctoral programmes in Engineering Management and in Management and Leadership offered at the Doctoral School of Business and Management. The subdepartment can also boast an impressive publication rate: their research has been published in several journals abroad; members have also presented their research in various international and national conferences. The subdepartment also count two books among their recent publications.
The Production Management Subdepartment deal with design and management issues in the efficient running of production and service systems. They coordinate research focused on the use of resources in production and services, on optimising logistics, and on the economic analyses of production and service systems. They also offer courses on related issues: Production Management, Organizing Production, Analysing Production and Service Decisions, Project Management, Logistics/ Supply Chain Management, Production Economics. These subjects comprise an essential part of both the engineering and economic BA/BSc programmes, and the deeper understanding of these fields is also indispensable for the MA/MSc degrees in Engineering Management and in Management and Leadership. The subdepartment’s teaching and research areas are similarly crucial for our MBA programme, as well, and a still deeper inquiry into these questions can be pursued at the Production Management PhD programme.
The subdepartment primarily uses quantitative methods to model, cost-analyse, and optimise production and service systems, as well as to explore rules and regularities in their operation. The theoretical basis for this research has been defined by novel modelling methods that emerged out of recent developments in computer science and information technology, as well as by the competitiveness-promoting property of quantitative methods.
